Family Betrayed as Bride Fakes Wedding Costs to Pay for Expensive Honeymoon. Weddings come with high costs. Between booking vendors, securing a venue, and finding the perfect dress, expenses add up fast. Many couples are fortunate enough to receive financial help from family or friends to manage these costs. That was the case for one bride, whose wedding plans were far beyond her budget. When she turned to her family for help, they were willing to contribute. However, their support took a turn when they discovered she had been profiting from their generosity.
A Sister’s Generosity and the Bride’s Deception
In a post on Reddit’s “AITAH” subreddit, the bride’s older sister shared the story. Although her family wasn’t wealthy, they all pitched in to help cover the wedding expenses. A few months before the big day, the bride approached her sister, claiming her wedding budget was over the limit. She requested ₦16,000,000.00 ($10,000), split into two payments of ₦8 000,000.00 ($5,000), to cover additional costs.
“I agreed to help, even though it meant dipping into my savings,” the sister wrote. The bride assured her it would be the last request, and her budget was tight but manageable. However, that turned out to be far from the truth.
Discovering the Bride’s Scheme
A mutual friend revealed the truth: the bride had a significant amount of money saved up and had been misrepresenting her financial situation to her family. This was confirmed when the sister discovered that the hotel rooms she had helped cover were ₦150,000.00 ($90) less than what her sister claimed. Additionally, although the bride said she couldn’t afford a honeymoon, she had shared flight reservations to Fiji with her friends.
It became clear to the Redditor that her sister had been inflating her financial need to fund a luxury honeymoon and high-end accessories.
The Confrontation
When the Redditor confronted her sister, the bride admitted to exaggerating her financial strain to get more money. “I was furious,” the sister wrote. “She took advantage of my generosity, and now I’m rethinking whether to help with the remaining costs.” Despite the bride’s pleas for her to reconsider, the Redditor felt deeply betrayed.
Family Division and Internet Support
While some family members believed the Redditor was being too harsh and suggested she overlook the issue, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her sister needed to face the consequences of her actions. The Redditor wrote, “I don’t want to be the villain, but she needs to understand the impact of what she’s done.”
The online community overwhelmingly sided with the Redditor. “You’re not the one ruining things—it’s her lies,” one commenter noted. Others pointed out that the bride should have planned a wedding within her budget instead of relying on her family to fund a luxury honeymoon. “Why are you paying anything? Your sister should have saved up or planned a smaller wedding,” one user commented.
